What’s in every puzzle

Each puzzle takes one small subject, such as the corner shop, baking day, spring bulbs, the pier, knitting or the brass band, and hides ten words about it in a twelve-by-twelve grid. The words read left to right or top to bottom, never backwards and never diagonally, and every word appears exactly once, checked by machine in all eight directions. The word list sits under the grid, the puzzle has the page to itself, and its solution is at the back of the book with every word marked.

The letters are 30-point, the largest print we make. That makes the puzzles a good fit for older solvers and anyone with low vision, but the themes are for everyone: ten books of a hundred, from The Good Old Days and Home Cooking to Days Out, Through the Year and a book of Calm and Comfort.

How to print them

Pick the file for your paper. Every book comes as a US Letter PDF and an A4 PDF, so nothing is cut off.
Print at 100%. Choose “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”. Black and white on plain paper is all it needs.
Print the pages you want. The puzzles are pages 4 to 103 and the solutions follow. Print one for the kitchen table or a stack for a group.
Print as often as you like. The personal-use license covers your own family, classroom or activity room.

Common questions

Are the word searches free?

The sampler is: ten puzzles, one from each book, with the solutions, and no email needed. The full books are $7.99 each, $16.99 for a trio and $39.99 for all ten.

Do the puzzles come with answers?

Yes. Every book has a solutions section at the back with each word marked in the grid it came from, and the free sampler includes its solutions too.

What size are the letters?

30-point, in a ruled twelve-by-twelve grid, on a US Letter or A4 page. Print on Tabloid or A3 with “Fit to page” for letters nearly half as large again.

Can I print a puzzle more than once?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for yourself, your family, your classroom or your activity room. The license has the details.
