Which animal book?
Cozy Cottage Woodland Friends gives every animal its own page: hedgehogs, bunnies, foxes, ducks and the pond, birds, squirrels and mice, deer and sheep, and farmyard friends, then woodland scenes and pages where they all get together (a campfire, a shared umbrella in the rain, a birthday cake). Each animal is round and cute, with a big head, closed happy eyes and a small smile, in a simple setting with plenty of space to color.
From The Honeywick Collection, Teatime in the Hollow is twenty woodland tea parties hosted by rabbits, foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, squirrels, mice, deer and owls, and Mushroom Cottages & Forest Friends is the forest folk’s village of mushroom houses, shops and paths. Both are drawn in fine detail for a longer, more absorbing page.
Cats have a page of their own. For animals plus the garden and the village, the Cozy Cottage Out & About Trio is three books for $16.99, and the Honeywick Storybook Trio puts both Honeywick animal books together with Cozy Village Walks.
Coloring ideas for cute animals
- Color fur in the direction it grows. Short pencil strokes that follow the body, lighter on the tummy and darker on the back, make fur look soft without drawing a single extra line.
- Keep it warm. Honey brown for hedgehogs and deer, terracotta and cream for foxes, soft grey for mice and bunnies, butter yellow for ducklings. Warm animals against a sage or sky-blue background always read clearly.
- Leave the highlights. A small uncolored patch on a nose, an ear or the top of the head looks like light catching it.
- Add blush last. A light touch of pink on the cheeks, after everything else, is what makes a cute animal look happy.
Try one first: the free Cozy Cottage sampler has a fox in the leaves and a hedgehog peeking out of a pile of them, and the Honeywick sampler has a mushroom house and a woodland tea party.
Common questions
They’re drawn for teens and adults, but the Cozy Cottage animals are cute and bold with nothing scary, so older children who color with pencils enjoy them. The Honeywick pages are finer and suit patient colorists.
No, they’re storybook animals: round, friendly and a little chibi, with happy faces. They’re still recognizably hedgehogs, foxes, bunnies and ducks.
