Sixty dragons and the places they sleep
Dragons and Their Lairs is our dragon book: 60 different pages, each a complete scene. There are dragons coiled on mountains of gold and gems, stretched along ruined temple walls, circling frozen lakes, perched on broken bridges and flying between storm-wrapped peaks. Between them are the places dragons keep: treasure caverns, crystal grottoes, lava chambers, ice caves, cliff-top eyries, an abandoned watchtower and a clutch of eggs nested in warm ash. The dragons are drawn with clearly jointed wings and plenty of scale pattern to fill.
Dragons also turn up in Mythic Beasts, which gives each legendary creature a page of its own, including a sea serpent, a basilisk and a hydra, and in The Winter Wilds, where an ice dragon flies beneath the aurora. For the dragon book plus the unicorn book and the beast book, the Creatures & Beasts trio is all three for $16.99.
Coloring ideas for dragons
- Pick one scale color and shade it. Go over the whole body in a mid tone, then darken the underside and lighten the back with the same pencil. The scales will do the rest.
- Keep the belly plates different. A paler or warmer color for the belly (cream on a green dragon, copper on a bronze one) separates the body from the hoard.
- Let the fire and gold glow. Layer yellow first, then orange, then a touch of red at the edges; leave the paper white at the brightest point.
- Use cool rock behind a warm dragon. Grey-blue caverns and mountains make a red or bronze dragon stand out.
Every book comes with a full-color reference guide, a colored version of each page numbered to match, if you’d like a palette to start from.
