Easy vs detailed coloring pages: which should you choose?

Coloring pages range from bold, open designs you can finish in an hour to intricate ones that take a whole evening. Neither is better. The right one is the one you’ll enjoy finishing, and that depends on your time, your tools and what you want coloring to do for you.

What’s the difference between easy and detailed coloring pages?

An easy coloring page has thick outlines, large shapes and plenty of open space: a cat, a teapot or a cottage drawn with a few confident lines. A detailed page uses thinner lines and many more, smaller areas: every brick, petal and roof tile drawn separately, often with texture or shading in grey. The practical differences are time (an hour or two against an evening or more), tools (almost anything works on an easy page; detailed pages need sharp pencils or fine tips) and mood. Easy pages are relaxing and quick to feel finished; detailed pages are absorbing, closer to a long puzzle.

Choose easy pages if…

  • You have twenty minutes to an hour at a time and like to finish a page in one sitting.
  • You color with markers or crayons, which struggle in tiny spaces.
  • You’re new to coloring, or coming back to it after years.
  • Fine detail strains your eyes or hands. Bold pages are also a good choice for older colorists.

In our shop that’s the Cozy Cottage Collection. The simplest books are Cozy Cottage Cats and Cozy Cottage Kitchen; Cozy Cottage Village is the fullest, a good step toward detail.

Choose detailed pages if…

  • You like to settle in for a long session and come back to the same page over several evenings.
  • You enjoy blending and shading with colored pencils.
  • You find repetitive detail calming: filling in a hundred petals is the point, not a chore.

That’s the Honeywick Collection. A Year at the Cottage has the most variety; Wildflower Cottage Garden and Cozy Village Walks are the densest.

Still not sure? Try both

The quickest way to know is to color one of each. Our free samplers have a page from every book in both series, with no email needed. Print one easy page and one detailed page on the same paper, give each half an hour, and notice which one you want to go back to. Our printing guide covers the settings, and this guide to pencils and markers covers what to color them with.

Common questions

Are easy coloring pages only for children?

No. Bold, simple pages are popular with adults who want to relax without concentrating hard, and with anyone who colors with markers. Ours are drawn for teens and adults, just with bigger spaces.

Do detailed coloring pages take a long time?

Usually an evening or more per page, depending on how much you blend and shade. Many people color a detailed page over several short sessions.

Which is better for stress relief?

Whichever you enjoy. Some people find the quick finish of an easy page relaxing; others find that the steady focus of a detailed page quiets the mind. Try one of each from the free samplers.
